Pro cleaner begs people to stop damaging cloth mistake

One of the most common spots people place wet cloths after cleaning is now a no-go zone after a professional cleaner warned of the consequences.
Charlotte alerted us to the problem with leaving cloths over taps to dry in a photo slideshow on TikTok.
She made the post after seeing many of her clients make the mistake with cloths.

The main problem with hanging wet cloths over taps to dry seems to be the cleaning products that end up on the cloths after wiping surfaces with them.
“I have seen many damaged taps from bleachy cloths left hanging on them. I personally never use bleach in my own home or in my clients, as it’s an unnecessary product. However I know so many of you are obsessed with the stuff,” she captioned her TikTok post.
“Bleach is very much corrosive to many surfaces, metals especially! Just because you haven’t seen any damage, it doesn’t mean damage isn’t been caused over time.”
It’s not just bleach that can be a problem – Charlotte says other cleaning products can result in damage too.
Her solution is to pop them in the wash straight after using them, since she recommends swapping them out daily.
If you do need to hang a cloth to dry before its next use or set it aside to wash later, there are alternatives to using the tap.
Charlotte suggested a sink tidy that attaches to the inside of the sink using suction plugs.
These kinds of sink tidies can be found anywhere that sells home storage, including Kmart where you can find a cloth holder for $5 which attaches to the door of the under sink cupboard.
There is also a two-pack sponge holder at Kmart for $5 that can be used for placing cloths on while they dry.
The frequency of washing and swapping over cleaning and dish cloths depends on how often they’re used and what they’ve been used to clean, though daily is generally recommended.

Some will clearly need to be tossed straight in the wash if they are visibly dirty or have been used to clean something particularly germy such as raw meat juice on the kitchen bench.
But if you aren’t swapping to a clean dish cloth every day the key is to make sure the cloth dries fully between uses to prevent bacteria from multiplying.
And if you’d like to avoid that all together try a dish brush, which studies have shown to have less bacteria build up than kitchen sponges because they are able to dry quickly.
